Does the Greek Golden Visa Lead to Citizenship? Work, Family and Travel Rights

No, the Golden Visa does not give citizenship directly; it gives a five-year renewable residence permit. With this permit you and your family can live in Greece, send your children to school and travel visa-free in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180. It does not give the right to paid employment in Greece. Citizenship is a separate process: it requires at least 7 years of legal residence in Greece, actually living there and passing a language and culture exam.

The road to citizenship
The general rule for Greek citizenship is at least 7 years of legal and continuous residence in Greece. The Golden Visa provides legal residence, but a citizenship application looks not only at the time on paper but at whether you have actually lived in Greece, your language skills and your integration. Applicants must pass an exam on Greek language, history and culture. In practice, a Golden Visa holder who spends most of the year outside Greece cannot meet these conditions.
In short, the Golden Visa is designed for a secure second home base in Europe and freedom to travel. If your goal is a second passport within a few years, the Golden Visa is not the right tool.
Work rights and companies
A Golden Visa holder cannot take paid employment in Greece. However, they can be a shareholder or board member of a Greek company and run a business abroad remotely from Greece. To work for an employer in Greece you need a separate work permit.
Tax
The Golden Visa does not by itself make you tax resident in Greece. Tax residence usually arises from spending more than 183 days a year in Greece or having your centre of life there. As a property owner you pay annual property tax (ENFIA); if you let the flat, the rental income is taxed in Greece and you must file a Greek tax return.
Renewal and keeping the property
- The permit is renewed every five years; you only need to still own the property.
- If you sell the property, the permit ends.
- A home bought under the Golden Visa cannot be let short term (daily, Airbnb style); long-term letting is allowed.
