How Do You Become a British Citizen? Does Buying a Home Lead to Citizenship? (2026)
Written by: Marcus M. Araz, MBA, PhD · Updated:
No, buying a home in the UK does not give you citizenship; the immigration rules have no visa, settlement or citizenship route based on owning property. The standard route to citizenship works like this: you live in the UK lawfully on a visa for at least 5 years, obtain settlement (ILR), and apply for citizenship once you have held ILR for 12 months. So the shortest route takes about 6 years. If you are married to a British citizen the period drops to 3 years and there is no 12 month wait after ILR. The application and ceremony fees together come to £1,839.
Citizenship requirements
| Condition | Standard route | Married to a British citizen |
|---|---|---|
| Residence period | The 5 years before the application | The 3 years before the application |
| Time spent abroad | No more than 450 days, and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months | No more than 270 days, and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months |
| Permanent status | ILR or settled status, held for at least 12 months | ILR or settled status (no 12 month wait) |
| Language | English at B1 level, or a degree taught in English | Same |
| The Life in the UK test | Must be passed | Same |
| Good character | No criminal, tax or immigration breaches | Same |
| Intention | Intention to continue living in the UK | Same |
| Age | 18 or over | 18 or over |
You must have been in the UK on the day the five year period starts, that is exactly 5 years before the Home Office receives your application. You must not have had any immigration restriction in the last 12 months.
Why does buying a home not lead to citizenship?
The only UK route that granted residence in return for investment, the Tier 1 (Investor) visa, closed to new applicants on 17 February 2022. Even when it was open, the investment had to go into companies; residential property did not count. Today there is no route in the immigration rules tied to owning property. Owning a home in the UK gives you an investment return and, if you come on another route, a home to live in. The full picture is on our does buying a home in the UK give residence page.

Changes on the agenda in 2026
In the May 2025 Immigration White Paper the government proposed raising the standard qualifying period for settlement from 5 to 10 years and lengthening the period needed for citizenship too. The consultation, run under the name “earned settlement”, closed on 12 February 2026; its outcome has not yet been published and the 10 year period has not entered the immigration rules. The rule in force today is 5 years for ILR and 5 years of residence for citizenship. The only confirmed change is the language requirement: from 26 March 2027 ILR applications will need English at B2 instead of B1, and this will also apply to people already on a route. For citizenship the requirement is still B1.
Children and dual citizenship
A child born in the UK is automatically British if, on the day of birth, a parent is a British citizen or has settlement (ILR). If a parent obtains ILR or citizenship before the child turns 18, the child can become a citizen by registration; the registration fee is £1,000. The UK allows dual citizenship; whether you keep Turkish citizenship depends on Türkiye’s own rules.
